A few tips for hoisting the sails of the HMS Steadfast, the backdrop for the Yo-Ho-Ho Show:
- You have several options for setting up the deck. Choose the one that best suits your space and budget.
- You’ll find a sailing ship’s outline on the Resource CD. You can project the sailing ship’s outline onto backdrop. A marvelous inflatable ship’s wheel is included in the kit!
- A variety of wonderful ship’s regalia can be found at seasidetreasure.com, nauticalshoppe.safeshopper.com, or other online retailers.
- A “real” ship’s mast and rigging make a wonderful prop. You can easily build them from PVC pipe and fittings. Place the mast on the front of a triangle of PVC pipe and brace it from all three points of the triangle using PVC connectors. Use connectors near the top for making a crossbar from which to hang white sheet for a sail. If you wish, add a smaller “HMS Steadfast” banner to the top of the mast.
- The backdrop or mast and the ship’s wheel are the main elements of your staging. Add a ship’s bell, available from the Web sites listed above, to use as an attention-getting device to open your show. Perch Pip, the parrot puppet, in an appropriate spot.
- Spread the floor of your stage area with tarps. Some of the pirate skits get a bit sloshy.
- Other items you may wish to add to your set include:
- an inflatable lifeboat or wooden rowboat,
- coiled rope,
- barrels, wooden or painted foam core,
- buoys,
- anchors,
- a large compass,
- waves cut from plywood or foam core, painted blue and braced across the front of the stage area.
-
Your microphone needs to be set up near the ship’s wheel. Mikes for the worship team can be set up to the left or right of the ship’s deck. Place speakers and screens in the best configuration for your stage area.
